Steam sale once again. Borderlands game of the year edition, for $7.40. intriguing game, however it has
4-player co-op. Need to go to "arena's" for PVP which was lame. Doesn't work like mmo arenas. You create a game, people join. If you want to fight each other, everyone needs to go to the arena. There's no cross-game arena matchmaking or anything like that. This game was designed for 4 player co-op.
The graphics of the game aren't bad at all. Some people don't like the look, some do. I can say myself that I think the artists who made this game are amazing at what they do.
Honestly if I had to compare these visuals I'd say borderlands is more graphically appealing than the game rage is.
The game was for the most part bug-free however you'll have to do some tweaks to fully appreciate the game. FoV and anti-aliasing are not readily available options in the in-game menu's, so you'll have to manually set your AA and your FoV yourself. Which wasn't too much of a hassle, but those features should come standard. *Ahem, console port.*
Next, content. A lot of the missions can be repetitive. They also re-use area's twice a lot of the time and it becomes predictable, making you backtrack to the same places a second time to finish new quests. Which wasn't really too much of a problem, it's just sort of a dirty trick to make the game feel longer, which disappointed me.
There's a ton of loot in this game, so if you love collecting gear and gearing characters then you're going to enjoy this. However once again, it has its flaws. For starters, the only customizable gear for your body armor is a shield and a class mod. There's no helmet or chest piece or wrist guards or anything like that, which comes standard in most decent rpg's. so I felt like it failed in that regard.
There is a ton of weapons and class mods to choose from though, which sort of makes up for the lack of body-gear in a sense. Still disappointed by that though.
Another problem with the looting is that, anyone can see any drop from a killed enemy, or any loot in any container that you come across in the world. So if you plan on jumping in a random public game and just enjoying yourself, it can tend to be a "who's going to get to the chest first" type of deal.
Which can not only be frustrating, but plays out for an ultimately bad experience. I would say the game is much more enjoyable if you're playing with people you know and get along with, or you may have a frustrating time.
Boss's were an all-around let down in this game. I found swarms of regular enemies to be a greater challenge than boss fights. There's just not enough skill involved in them. There's minimal tactics and timing required to beat boss's, so that was disappointing for me.
There's four characters to choose from. All of them are unique and have their own single special ability that they can employ. You can level them all from 1 to 69, and they all have their own unique skill tree's that you can customize as you gain experience points by killing//questing.
You'll fight humans, zombies, robots, and a wide variety of beasts in the game in a lot of different locations. Just expect to do a lot of traveling back to the same locations though, because the game does re-use the same area's multiple times repeatedly throughout the game.
You can drive ground-based vehicles which you will need for traveling, due to the worlds decent size. There is some ground-based vehicle combat in the game. There are no flying vehicles in the game, so don't expect to jump in some sort of helicopter or a plane of any kind.
All in all it was an enjoyable experience and a long game. A million times better than that rage game. Despite this being a very solid game, it still comes with its fair share of flaws, the biggest two being its repeatability problem, and its looting mechanics. It's lack of competitive pvp was also disappointing.
But if you can get past those issues, you'll like the game if you like FPS//RPG games.
Sayin' it like it is, as always ~ Shelledfade ~
