Finally a truly great RPG experience on the PSP!

Brave Story: New Traveler is everything I had hoped it would be. The graphics are simply amazing, and not just for the PSP. IMOH the visuals are easily on par with standard console RPG's. The only exception is a lack of CGI cut scenes. The cutscenes in Brave Story are all in engine, which honestly doesn't disapoint me at all. The standard "worldmap" view is fairly zoomed out which gives the game a feel similar to older 2d sprite RPG's. One of the more unique visuals in the game is the use of words like "Kapow!" and "Shikkt" when you hit in combat. IT gives it a nice since of humor in a genre who's feet are more often than not grounded in the serious, at least stateside.

The gameplay is fairly standard for any fan of turn-based RPG's (ala Final Fantasy) Magic is replaced by "Bravura" and the "Unity" feature (more powerful spells utilizing two characters) replaces "Summons". There is a crafting feature for accessories involving collecting diagrams of the item and then the parts to craft it with from the monsters you fight. There is also a mini game of sorts involving collecting birds to trade in for items or use in another mini-game called "birdbrawling". You basically catch as many birds as you can within a set time limit and after they are tallied up they are fused into one bird as a sort of "total" score.

In the sound department the musical score and sound effects are again rather standard for RPG gamers, but with a touch of old school flare. The sound reminds me more of Breath of Fire 3 or Chrono Cross, than more recent offerings.
