Brutal Legend is by far one of the most original games to date. I will start by saying that it can be short BUT only if you rush through it. I played, sorry am playing Brutal Legend. I have beaten it but after 10 hours of gameplay. Many people even reviewers rushed through going from story quest to story quest. That would only take 5-6 hours. I on the other hand completed the secondary side missions and by completed I mean every one of them. The side missions vary from ambush which is with you and a group of soldiers fighting the enemy in the area. Another is death rack which places Eddie Riggs in a turret made of the Deuce ( his car) and guarded by a group of soldiers, Eddie must kill all attacking enemies. All side missions aren't fighting like the racing missions. Where Eddie must race a demon in his car called the squealer. These races will take you through many of the areas environments. All missions whether primary or secondary give you fire tributes. Fire tributes are the cash of Brutal Legend. You gain fire tributes by pleasing the metal gods. When you've aquired the tributes you can go to a motor forge which you must raise from the earth playing a guitar solo. Once entered via the Deuce you'll meet the guardian of metal known as Ozzy. Here you can buy different axes, guitars, Deuce upgrades, weapons(rockets, mg's,mines, flame thrower, and homing missiles) and paint jobs. Axes can set enemies a blaze, electricute them and nearby foes, or steal their health and give it to you. Guitars are your ranged attacks. The guitar can perform many attacks from lightning, pyro, earthquakes, and the many solos. Solos can only be obtained by finding the metal slabs. These slabs teach Eddie how to call in burning zepplins to burn his foes in a blazing death, facemelter-which literally melts the enemies face, Dawn of light which turns the sky to sunlight giving your soldiers attack advantage. Battle cry increases all near by troops offensive capabilities. Your troops vary from headbangers which are your melee type who bash foes with steel like skulls, your archers are razor girls who shoot shotgun/rifle lasers from the bones of a razor boar( wild life found in Brutal Legend), Guards who are an upgrade from headbangers but in few numbers they have giant fists of pain, your medic's are the bikers who play heavy metal restoring health to allies and can stun enemies when in a double team with you, ranged vehicles are skull crushers which are giant ballista's, fire barons who ride motorcycles and throw fierce molotovs, and the best the rock crusher who shoots with a catapault and grinds up enemies. Each unit has a double team capability. The story takes place with Eddie Riggs a roadie who is teleported back in time by his mysterious belt buckle which was crafted by demons. Eddie joins the human rebellion against Lion Whyte a corrupt human general who is more punk rock than metal. He is only the first of your problems. Along the way Eddie falls in love with Ophelia. Other enemies are the Drowning sorrow who are humans but only dead and emo metal fans. They have zombie miltia, headless brides, voodoo dolls that can walk a fight by long ranged attacks using their own hair, rat men who spew vile rats who attack and devour flesh of your soldiers, and many more such as tree mamoths who are mountains that walk and smash al in their path with attacking projectile crows. Then you'll fight the demon's the rulers of the land. They have battlle nuns to headless giants with maces. The variation of units for all 3 armies is vast. You could be riding a mammoth lion who breathes fire as Eddie or be controlling the Tree mammoth from a top his branches, or even as Deviculos the demon leader riding overblessers( basically legs as tall as buildings that stomp and produce additional units. You can use these people in the multiplayer which at first is hard but beat a few AI battles in the campaign and you'll get the hang of it. In the stage battles you must gain fans which are spirits craving rock you must play a solo and up pops a merch booth giving the fans to you which you can use to build an army. Commands are simple and with each avatar able to fly yes even Eddie which you'll learn in the story it becomes easier to move troops. The only problem is trying to issue single orders to one unit in particular it can be quite frustrating. The world of Brutal Legend is awe inspiring and will intrigue you to explore the world looking for legend( old stories of the past), fire serpents( statues which if freed can increase Eddie's maximum health with every 10 serpents freed), or metal relics which unlock songs that can be played in the Deuce.
Brutal Legend is an awesome game and is a must but for metall fans. The graphics are outstanding and voice acting is spot on. The screen writer is a genius since the chatter between characters is so funny. Brutal Legend does show emotion you'll be sad and disheartened when a member of your team dies yes it does happen just warning you. This is rare for me and many other gamers to feel any connection with a video in game AI character. Brutal Legend therefore receives a 9.25 and has pleased not only me but the Metal Gods.
When I look back on a library of 2 decades worth of games, there are certain few that stand out in memory as exemplary experiences all around. Among them are certainly the Monkey Islands, Full Throttle, and the classic G... Read Full Review
