Really now, we've seen better, a lot better...

User Rating: 6.5 | Bulletstorm PC
Bulletstorm is just one of those typical modern shooters. I must laugh when I think of all the adverts they made for it for not being another-boring-shooter, but at the same time they accomplished exactly the same as others. On a positive note the skill-kill system in the game is fun, the first half of the game at least, and the graphics especially some outdoor places look great. On the negative side, the story is really the dumb, the characters are, at least for me, absolutely not likeable and it gets very repetitive after a time. It is definitely just a short term destination.

Graphics 9/10
Easily the best part of the game. While the city, desert and indoor environments look roughly more or less average, some outdoor areas, especially the overlook at the dam, look really impressive. The characters are detailed enough, even though we've seen better. Too bad that the graphic environments don't change as much as you would like. Almost the whole game, save for the first 2 chapters, takes place is roughly the same looking city. Too bad really, the graphics had potential, they could have added a forest chapter (not just a city garden). Anyway the graphics are above average definitely.

Sounds 7/10
The sounds and voice acting are good, but all the swearing brings the sounds down. I am the last person who would have something against profanity, but this game just doesn't make a lot of sense in using it. Two characters come to mind. The main villian, a general who swears in every, and I mean every, sentence at least two times. The second would be the one of the main heroes, a girl named Trishka. I can understand why the guys (or girls for that matter) would swear from time to time when they have a reason to, but obviously the producers misunderstood the term strong-woman, and interpreted it as a someone who always swears, always screams, always punches, always acts tough for no reason, etc. This is just stupid, a moronic guy could act that way, but no girl would ever act that way. When girls are moronic, they do other things than that. They tried to make her a strong-woman and they failed and made her a man with a girls body, and the things she keeps saying are a prime example of this principle.

Story 2/10
I rate a good story above 8, an average story above 5, no story at all around 3 or 4. But this game, this game would be better off if it had no story at all, than the presented story is so c.r.a.p. that words cannot even describe it.
First of all, as usual with shooters, the main characters are only harmed when they want to get harmed, other than that they can survive everything without a scratch, which leads to some really dumb situations, like waking up on a demolished bridge (but not falling down from it while unconscious), waking up after a monorail crash in the middle of a monster army (but not getting eaten by them while unconscious), waking up 'insert random death defying situation' (but 'insert extreme hazards which our heroes avoided while sleeping merrily').
Secondly, the game is as linear as they come. Would it kill the developers to add a few sidequests and smaller areas which you might miss and not explore?
Thirdly, the main characters are absolutely not likeable. The main hero is stupidly cocky and idiotic. The main villian is shallow, has little or no backstory and disappointed me even more than the main character. The girl is, well, I already said my opinion about the 'girl'. The only character which has a roughly believable personality, but only roughly, is the cyborg.
So the story is bad, but how bad? Well, you can see how much on the fact that the biggest surprise I had while playing this game was that the main heroine's breasts were small...in other words, the story is totally lame.

Gameplay 7/10
The main area of advertisment for this game was the skill-kill system. Meaning that the more exotic and unique the kill is, the more points you get to spent on upgrades. Besides this system there are only 2 new parts, the leash (which you can use to hurl enemies towards you) and the kick (which you can use to hurl enemies away from you, and damn, I haven't seen such strong kicking since dukem nukem's 3d mighty kick). The skill-kill system works nice, it provides a lot of fun in some parts of the game (mainly when the are cacti around) and there are over 130 different kills so you have to work quite hard to get them all. But this system also contains some very important flaws which bring it down, these are:
1. There are way too few ways to spend the points. The weapons can be upgraded with an alternative firing mode, but that's about it. Other than that, you can only buy ammunition and ammunition increase upgrades (which are both useless since you find more ammo on the way than you need). The system fails to deliver more upgrades, like weapon damage, reload speed, perhaps unlock more skill-kills, etc.
2. It is fun only while it lasts, meaning about half of the game. After that the system stops saving the game from being another run-of-the-mill shooter title as it gets too repetitive and you will do keep doing the same few skill-kill which are easy to execute over and over again.
3. It can happen that the system kills the fun. If you are trying to accomplish all kills, you will notice that some (even the not-special ones) require really a certain time and place and are almost not possible otherwise. Of course you do not know this and keep wasting too much ammution to try and get something done, without realizing you already passed the place where it was really easy to achieve.
All in all, the system breaks the monotony of the genre, but not as much as a gamer would want.

Replayability 8/10
Not bad, not bad really. To get all kills will require replaying, echoes are a good way (small, rated segments, whose score you can compare online). And besides, hurling enemies on cacti doesn't get old that quickly, unfortunately the same can't be said about other fights during the game. More types of enemies (there are only 3 types actually), more types of mini bosses (there is only one type with changing weapons), more bosses (only one fighting boss, 2 mini bosses and one action sequence boss), more ways to spend points and at least some sidequest, all these are ways the game's replay value could have been improved. As for multiplayer, stay with COD or BBC.

In the end Bulletstorm is not a bad shooter, I just am already quite tired of the same principles this genre offers. I would recommend it to people who are fans of shooters and to people who have nothing better to play until something better comes out.
