New modes, awesome tracks, fast cars, great improvements, this is a must have for burnout fans.

User Rating: 10 | Burnout Revenge PS2
EA has done it once again. Next in series, Burnout revenge has inherited everything from its predecessor and taken it to a new level. This review is written for the PS2 version and those who are familiar with the previous games. Gameplay: 10/10

Though the gameplay hasn’t changed much, there have been significant improvements. In races, you earn boost by pretty much the same way. You “takedown” other cars, shunt, slam and tailgate rivals to earn boost. You can drift, escape crashes and even earn boost by big airs. What new is the “traffic check” where you can slam and move outgoing cars out of your way. This is a great add on to the series and is absolute fun to do it. You cannot slam oncoming traffic and very heavy vehicles though. The “checked” traffic can also be used to takedown other rivals too. Most tracks are well designed and have many shortcuts, indicated by blue lights. Many tracks have huge ramps where you can achieve great airs and land on top of rival cars to achieve a “vertical takedown”, another great addition. Some tracks are from the east where you drive on the wrong side of the road, which adds more variety to the tracks. The crash mode is the same too where you crash your vehicle to cause major damage but with MANY additions. You begin each crash with boost start. This boost start can lead to a “perfect start”, “fast start”, “slow start” or a full blown engine depending on how quick you are on the fingers. Basically, you have to stop an indicator when you begin the crash at the right time to earn the perfect start. The crashbreaker is no longer a pickup but you get crahbreakers when some amount of vehicles crash. The crash mode will require a bit of thinking or a strategy sometimes. Finally, the greatest addition to the game : Traffic Attack. This mode, as the name suggests, lets you take your anger on the traffic. The level starts with a countdown timer and keeps counting down unless you hit traffic. You get awarded for each vehicle you hit and the countdown time is extended, allowing you to hit more traffic. A great mode to take your anger on real life traffic: P
What is most annoying in the entire game, however, are the load times. They are long and they are often. You didn’t do well in a race, wanna restart? Well, take a nap while the level loads! Seriously, the load times will be annoying.

Graphics: 9/10

The graphics are awesome, if there isn’t any other word to describe them. The tracks are beautiful and the cars look real. They have more detail and depth. The traffic too is given better details in the game and the track designs are excellent. The framerate is always steady, no matter what you’re driving. The blur effects and the burst effects when you boost is great. If you have time to look at the environments, take a look for yourself for the details given to them. Sound: 9/10

Awesome too. The most significant is the sound of wind whizzing past when you drive. This truly gives the sense of speed when you play the game. The cars roar as they should and the screeching of tires when you drift is worth listening, not to mention the blast of cars in crashbreaker mode. The game has plenty of EA tracks, most of them are excellent. Value: 10/10

The single player mode has huge number of events. Each event is divided into ranks and they unlock as you progress. The ranks unlock new cars and previous events too. This mode will definitely take you more than 7-8 hours at least to finish. The online mode is more engrossing and will have you glued to your seat for hours. Online play supports 6 players with competitive, co-op or team-oriented play. The online team event is a type pf road rage where one team tries to finish the race and the other tries to stop it. The game also supports splitscreen racing including crash battle where you play with your friend on the same crash track at the same time. Great value for the game.

Finally, I would say, this game is a must have for burnout fans, there are plenty of differences to check out here. It is also recommended for those who are not familiar with the series as well.
