For the redneck in all of us...

ok, i am a democrat boy from chicago. after playing this, aside from the bush-loving and poverty, i want to be a redneck. that, or one of those rich guys who go on african safaris on every weekend. i never was all that interested in hunting games until this game came around. shooting defenseless little reindeer, virtual or otherwise, didnt seem like much of a fun activity. here, you are more likely to be mauled by grizzly bears or eaten alive by hyennas than carry home a prize buck. on my first hunt, i was convinced that i would be able to easily shoot a few 4 legged critters and collect there corpses. nothing to it, eh? how wrong i was... i had gone to an african savannah in free hunt mode. so, there i was, armed with nothing but a traditional bow (to add to the challenge), and expecting to walk home sucessfully a few minutes later. about 2 minutes into the hunt, i was stampeded by a herd of water buffalo. as they ran towards me, i tried to shoot them with arrows, but the arrows bounced off of their thick skulls as they ran me over. these sorts of exciting moments are very common in this game. you begin walking around, and are suddenly attacked. i have noticed that as thrilling as these hunts are, shooting herbivore game is a helluva lot harder. while you can basically stand still for a minute or two and wait for the predators to find you, you have to use tracking skills and have good marksmenship in order to shoot a deer or gazelle. animals aside, this game has a good selection of weaponry. before each hunt, you are allowed one defensive weapon (pistol or knife) and one hunting weapon (bow or rifle) among other supplies. oftentimes, you run out of ammo early on in the hunt and are forced to ues your pistol to shoot game. once, i had to shoot a moose with my pistol from a few hundred yards away. O_o. this game has a decent amount of areas to hunt in, varying from the north american to african. each has its own game and hazzards. for example, while hunting in alaskan mountains, you may have to shoot your game from a certain angle to stop it from rolling down a cliff, into the ocean. these sort of hazzards make for a decent amount of strategy. some of the larger areas allow you an atv or other vehicle to cross them faster. one annoying aspect of the game is that you quickly lose health whenever you step in water, no matter how shallow. hopefully, this will be cleared up in future games. this game has decent graphics considering when it was made. it also has great sound. you can clearly hear animals from far away and they all make realistic yelps and growls. for those who are turned off by bloody games, there is not much problem in this game. when shot, animals only have a wound where the bullet hit and a few drops of blood on the ground. finally, the controls are quite similar to most first person shooters, with the gun's trigger being a shoulder button.
