Seriously unfun.
Unfortunately the Sega CD game "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: The second cataclysm" is based on the kids cartoon instead of the awesome comic book. The game based on the comic book- the CAPCOM beat-em up (only in the arcade) was much better.
The Sega CD game is an on-rails shooter, which mercifully is very short.
There are 9 levels, however the first six are the same- with only the enemies and background changing slightly. Its all driving your red Cadillac while shooting. However you are driving through the jungle shooting sticks out of the way of your car. You spend more time doing this then the good stuff like shooting.....I dont know....DINOSAURS.
To keep you on your toes you have a damage meter that fills slowly as you hit rocks and sticks along the way- when you hit a dinosaur you die. You have several lives, all of which you can lose within several seconds, as you hit a boulder, reload, hit a tree, reload, hit a dinosaur. Its all very aggravating.
Upon completing the same jungle level over and over for six levels, you switch to a mine cart shooter for the final three levels where you attempt to cause a meltdown in a reactor....inside a volcano.
There is a two-player mode, which I did not try. I wouldn't cause a friend to suffer through this with me. Its just plain not a good game. "Game" is really giving it alot of credit- you have a score and some lives but really that it the end of the similarities. I truly found the game a chore. I don't even mind FMV games. Some I have quite a bit of fun with, in a "so bad its good" way. Not here, this game was agonizing from the moment I hit start to the conclusion- to an ending that confused me more than any other. Im not sure what happened at the end of the game. In fact the last level was different the second time I played through it, and I couldnt figure out what to do to complete it.
The universe is very cool. I enjoyed the cinemas, and Hannah's voice actor does a good job. But the in game graphics are too pixelated and grainy to enjoy (even for Sega CD), and outside of Hannah- the voice acting is terrible. Like american Sonic Adventure terrible.
However, the music is catchy and I was tapping my foot, BUT the soundeffects were terrible. No "ompf" to the guns, no clarity to the ambient sounds.
This game is truly a missed opportunity. I cannot even recommend it for the collector. Its a terrible game on any system and a terrible rail shooter/fmv game...even for Sega CD. The home of the terrible rail shooter/fmv game.
A 3. For the cinemas only.
