I love Bethesda, but sadly, the scariest things in this game are the technical bugs.

The idea behind the game is unique and compelling. No HUD. No weapons for the first THREE HOURS (which can be frustrating). A great story based on the works of a great author. Scary as hell (especially with Jack's visions and the atmospheric sounds). Unfortunately, the execution is an absolute disaster.

I'll admit, I'm pretty bad at stealth and mystery games, and at times I didn't know what I was supposed to do. I wouldn't have minded this as much if the most difficult puzzles weren't amazingly far away from the last save point. The inability to save whenever really hurts when small mistakes can really cost you, considering how fragile Jack is (I must have been wearing 10 or 15 splints by the time I finished the first 3rd of the game).

The gameplay is actually pretty convincing and only rarely frustrating, as the gunfights are done well and hitting enemies in certain spots gives different damage effects (hitting a baddie in the legs slows them down, a headshot is a one-hit kill).

I wanted to love this game. I really did. Bethesda is one of my favorite game companies. H.P. Lovecraft has a great reputation. The story really sucks you in... but the technical bugs absolutely ruin the game. I couldn't bring myself to finish the game. The game records that I spent 4 hours on it (after which I finished about half the game, by the way), but I swear that I spent almost 15 hours having to redo this and that after a bug stopped my progress or completely confounded me. Two quick examples:

1) In an underground chamber, I was supposed to push a column to a certain location to unlock a door. Halfway through pushing the column, it ceased to be a solid object. Jack would simply walk right through it when I tried to push it, thus making the level unfinishable (I had to restart the level).

2) After one of Jack's visions, he just stood there. He wouldn't respond to any buttons, and I couldn't even bring up the menu. I quit playing after this.

These are only two examples, but I ran into about 4 or 5 bugs that completely prevented me from continuing the game. This doesn't even count the many small annoying ones that took the pleasure out of the game.

I really want to see where this game was going, so I'm going to have to look for a speed-run or something of the game, because the story is just that good. Unfortunately, it's just too frustrating to play. I can't recommend this game to anyone.
