Am I in the minority when it comes to the limited linear gameplay? The scripted events are OLD! Give me free play!

I have purchased every game in the series, going back to the original PC game in 2003. The game has come a long way and with every iteration it has often exceeded my expectations. The action is always intense and frantic. I have since abandoned the PC and for the last 3 releases played the game on XBOX 360. With every release, I spend my $64.00 after tax on the game.

I am probably in the minority when it comes to playing this series on my console. When I play the campaign, I grow tired of the, "scripted" events in the game. I want to be able to get in a car, for example (first level drive) Maybe I would like jump out, make a left turn, brake to the point of almost coming to a complete stop, shoot and kill the enemy if wish. I do not have this option! If I die because of my decision, then make me start the check point over! But allow me to take an alternate path if I so choose. Am I the only person who finds the scripted events tiresome and linear?
COD BO is fun, but it really is getting long in the tooth as far as the campaign is concerned. This game survives because of the on-line play. It does not come close to, Halo: Reach in single player experience.

If you have not played Just Cause 2 or Halo reach solo, you are really missing out.
