This game is not revolutionary enough to be a masterpiece, but it's by no means a bad game

"Call of Duty: Black Ops" is a typical Call of Duty videogame, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. A typical Call of Duty game means a deep story mode, crazy zombie killing, and of course, what the series is most widely known and loved for, intense multiplayer competition. The one thing that disappointed me about this game is there were only a few small specks of originality. The Call of Duty games have been running on the same game engine for the past four years. It was great to see the franchise spread to a different time zone, this time being the cold war. They also added an interesting new currency system for multiplayer, and wager matches that allow players to risk their "COD points" in order to try and win some more. These did make it distinguishable from the last game in the series, but the game was by no means revolutionized. The story mode was among the best of the Call of Duty campaigns. The setting of "Black Ops" in the cold war added a mysterious feel to the game that made it even more interesting. Throughout the campaign, it is pretty much all nonstop action. This could be good for some gamers, but it seems like it could wear people out and make them want to take a break. The game makers, Activision, made a great choice to bring back the "Zombies" mode from a previous game in the series. In this mode, you and a friend or two can take on hordes of zombies, in a round based setting. This mode can be fun to jump into to have some fun with some friends without much competition like in multiplayer, and a story to follow like in campaign. Although some new comers to first person shooters may be intimidated by the multiplayer aspect, it is definitely the most favored feature for experienced gamers, and anyone seeking good competition. The new "wager matches" make the competitive stakes even higher. This is an outstanding game for new comers to the series, but for some it may seem a bit too familiar, depending on who you ask. And if you're asking me, I would say they should take more than just one year to put out a new game, and really do something new next time. I would give Call of Duty Black Ops a 8.5 out of 10.
