Being the game that got me into shooters, I would say that this game definitely stands as a good WWII shooter.
The story is pretty much that you play through the missions given to different soldiers varying from the American, Russian, and British armies. You go on various missions with your computer-controlled allies. The lack of direction of this game surely handicapped it a bit. Amateur gamers can easily become lost in the level they're playing and get frustrated.
The weapons in this game are various in number. You can choose between rifles and semi-automatics and various others inbetween. You can carry two weapons at a time and also carry along other weapons like grenades or items like health packs that definitely come in handy. If worse comes to worse you can still melee attack with the weapon you are currently using. The weapon selection was pretty good in my opinion.
Using and throwing grenades can become a bit difficult. You can't cook a grenade or throw it back if the enemy throws one at you which is a bit of a nuisance since your only option is to run which opens you to enemy fire. They can also be a bit unpredictable since they get quite jumpy when they bounce of walls and such. It gets annoying when trying to take down an unexplored room and you miss and it bounces back on you possibly killing you or taking off quite a bit of your life.
The graphics in the game are pretty up to par but are nothing that much to rave about. The weapon models are easily told apart, but they aren't defined. The background is pretty decent for a shooter of early 2000, but it isn't exactly amazing. The sound work on this game is pretty good as well. The weapon sounds are pretty good and can be heard easily. They again aren't anything to rave about but are still good enough for a shooter game.
The multiplayer on the PS2 version of this game was great. With a ton of different match-styles and modes and all of the added options, you are bound to have a lot of fun. The online mode allows for up to 16 players at a time to play a game with each other. The online modes run smoothly even when filled with a lot of players.
All in all, Call of Duty: Finest Hour is a pretty decent game. With maybe a few tweaks here and there it could have gotten a much better score, but is still an enjoyable game none the less. You will find yourself playing this game with non-stop enjoyment despite of its shortcomings. You will not be disappointed with this game and although there are better games, this game is certainly no shame to have in your game collection.
