Castle Crashers is a solid XBLA title, it has the feel of the classic side scrollers like ninja turtles. However, this isn't your just your ordinary button masher, the combo system gets to be pretty expansive (try my X,X,Y to knock em up in the air A,A for the aerial combo, throw a bomb to pop em back up in the air, jump up Y,Y,Y to knock across the room then shoot em with an arrow, then say "flawless victory" in your mortal combat voice). You can also cast magic, shoot arrows, throw bombs, and eat sandwiches that give you incredible hulk-like powers. The game features a dose of RPG elements which not only gives longevity to the game, but also seems to remedy the the difficulty. I went into the thieves arena and got killed by 6 of those little arrow-flingin' bastards. I Left, leveled up a little came back and cleared the entire arena. The single player experience is great but (as always) the multiplayer is what brings it home. Things get hectic when at the end of the level everybody is trying to get that kiss from the princess, and the arena in multiplayer is just insane. The visuals are simplistic but they work very well, the looks match the tone of the game. There's quite a bit of humor to go along with all the action from animals that get so scared they poo-rocket themselves off screen to a cyclops, knight, and princess love triangle, hilarity ensues. The "gore" that the game gives you the option of turning off, almost gets to be unnoticeable with all the frantic action going on screen. It is funny to see a knight get decapitated with with a tree branch though. All the extras in the game are cool, the different weapons, the unlockable characters, bats that bite your enemies' heads, and monkeys that find stuff, its all fun. Sound wise, it leaves a little something to be desired but turn on some music and its all good. I would recommend this game to fans of old school beat-em-ups, RPG fans, and anyone who's just looking for a fun, entertaining game to play alone or with friends.
