Castle of Illusion is a very simple, but lovable platform game.

Micky Mouse - Castle of Illusion is one of the games I played a lot during my early days. The odd thing is, I like this game way more now than I ever did back then. Castle of Illusion is a very sweet and simple, but surprisingly challenging game.

The story goes that the evil Witch Mizrable is not happy. She is jealous of Minnie Mouses looks and personality. So she kidnaps her one day and goes to cast a spell to make herself beautiful and make Minnie look ugly like her. Micky runs off to save her from the Castle of Illusion

The game consists of five uniquely themed worlds. The worlds range from a toy land to a forest to a Sweet themed land. Each world consists of three segments. Some have specific gimmicks to try and help make them feel unique. One level enables you to flip gravity, another has you having to try and get to the safety of platforms to avoid being washed away by sudden rushes of water.

The game play is very simple and all you have to do is get to the end of the level whilst overcoming obstacles. Micky has two attacks, he can jump on enemies or throw items at them. The levels are fun to play and I feel the worlds are actually really imaginative. It's just one of those games which is so simple, but you just can't help but thouroughly enjoy it as you play through it,

Aside from the normal and hard difficulty settings; there is also a practice mode which contains easier versions of three segments from three worlds. This is great for younger players who may find the main game too challenging.

The graphics are nice. The backgrounds are nice and really add to the feel of this Illusionary Castle. The sprites are nice and some of the creatures are really just too cute. The music is really nice too.

For the most part the game controls fine, but sometimes it can be a bit stiff and this can lead to not being able to reach certain platforms. This can lead to unnesesary deaths, it seems to be when you are travelling in one direction and then sharply turn to face the other and jump that it seems to do that. So just make sure you turn then jump a milli second later and the stiffness doesn't occur. So you can adapt and play around this.

Overall, this game is a great old platforming gem. I highly reccomend this to all Mega Drive / Genesis owners. The simple gameplay is just really fun and it's challenging difficulty will require you to have a few attempts before you are able to finish the game.
