Sega's sole Castlevania entry, but not a wasted one.
For a Genesis game, the graphics are very good, though it pales in comparison to the SNES’ Super Castlevania 4. Still, the environments were well detailed and colorful. The music stands on its own as well. Most of the game has it own original music, but some tunes from previous installments do make an appearance. This isn’t really anything new. The game play is typical Castlevania. Simple attack and jump commands, though you can use you whip to swing on ceilings or pole vault to a higher level with the second character. Having more than one character to choose from was also a unique feature for a Castlevania game. Sure, in Castlevania III you could switch characters, but this was the first one to have two characters to start out with. The difficulty was about average for the series. It wasn’t really too hard to too easy. It still took a modest amount of time for me to get through the game, but I wasn’t pulling my hair out with frustration or breezing through it after only a couple of hours of play.
The first and only Castlevania game to come out for a Sega system was an excellent game and didn’t tarnish Castlevania’s image. Just a side note, I am not counting Dracula X for the Saturn since it was an import. Any fan of the series either already has this game or would be happy to have it in their collection.
