Castlevania is a return to the roots of this storied Capcom franchise. While the current generation has attempted unsuccessful 3D games based on the Belmont family, this is the first to finally deliver. The premise is simple. You are Nathan Graves and your job is to enter Dracula's Castle and rescue your mentor. The amazingly animated backgrounds are similar in style to the PS1 game, Symphony of the Night. The main character battles enemies within the castle to gain experience (just like an RPG) and level up. Each level increase grants you more mind points to do magic attacks based on cards that you some enemies leave behind. These cards are part of an intricate system which allows you to customize Nathan with protective shields and powerful magic assaults. Items can be equipped to boost stats in order to strengthen the abilities you prefer to use. The game has amazing boss battles which, though you will learn quickly how to damage them, will still provide a challenge. The only drawbacks to this game are the colors (which, though appropriate for the content, can make it difficult to see the action on screen) and the recuperative items such as potions. These items recover very little health and you will have to use many to heal damage from the later enemies. Still, the return of Castlevania to its 2D beginnings gives you the entertaining gameplay that one expects from this great franchise.
