A good game poorly developed.

User Rating: 7.7 | Castlevania PS2
Since Symphony of the Night, Castlevania's franchise has been a hit. But the first installment on PS2 is an unfortunate event for those who expected an adventure on par with Alucard's game.
For those who tought that Konami learned well copycating everything they could from Super Metroid (don't tell me that SotN isn't a copy, because it is!), Lament of Innoncence comes to prove them worng. It's an original game, it's true, but it's also far inferior to the level of quality Catlevania's fans were addicted to on the PSOne.
The graphics are great and the game runs smoothly most of the time. The level of detail is not that great, but the textures are fine and well designed. The animation is good, mostly, but sometimes it's a little weird. In general, the game is pure beauty to the eyes.
The sound is good, too. BUt don't expect too much from the sound effects nor the voice over. The SFX are plain and simple, barely doing their job. The voice over, in turn, is just bad (both in English and Japanese!). Don't waste your time listening to the dialogs or the narration, because you will be at risk of getting so mad at the bad dubbers that you may throw the DVD away through the window!
The gameplay is simple, maybe far too simple for it's own good... If you don't have a problem with button smashing games, then you're on! But don't expect tactical combats nor a good gameply: look somewhere else, maybe on Nintendo's Metroid! (I'm far too sarcastic...)
The story is as bad as the voice over. Nothing to say about it: just don't listen to anything and play the game enjpoying the great instrumental background music.

In the end, Castlevania: Lament of Innoncence is dead by birth: with so many expectations over it, because SotN was one of the best games ever released for PSOne, LoI ends up as a bad game, while it's actually a nice game for rental... But you will be too annoyed weeping over the fact that it isn't half as good as SotN to notice that...
