Remake done right
User Rating: 9.5 | Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles PSP
For fans of the Castlevania series, this is a game you absolutely cannot miss. The game is a PSP remake of a previously unreleased in the US game, Castlevania : Rondo of Blood. Not only that, it also features the original Rondo AND Castlevania : Symphony Of The Night. By PSP standards, the graphics are pretty good, but not the best PSP has seen. As for the gameplay... simply amazing. The controls are tight and work well, though occasionally you'll fall victim to a missed jump leading to a death fall. Play wise, it feels just like the classic side-scrolling, monster whipping Castlevania seen in all games before Symphony of the Night, except it's got itself a well done "2.5D" facelift. Aside from a few fully 3D cutscenes, not much has changed from the original Rondo of Blood, not that US players would know. As for the difficulty, yes it's hard. I would say it's a bit more difficult than the original. However, if you're familiar with the punishing difficulty of the classic Castlevania games, you aren't gonna be crying about it. If you aren't, you need patience, and lots of it, for a game this difficult. The music in the game is great too. Not that a Castlevania fan would expect anything less. Alot of the music from the original Rondo of Blood has been tweaked to have a more modern sound to it [what with better audio capabilities than 13 years ago] and a few have been replaced altogether. Though as far as I'm concerned, all the changes made to music were very good. Altogether this game is a hard to miss title for Castlevania fans, and I'd say well worth the price. The only problem I have with Dracula X Chronicles lies within the unlockable full game Castlevania Symphony of the Night, where the Sega Saturn version of the game is playable. The audio in the Saturn version of the game is terrible. The sound effects and voiceovers for this version are a catastrophe when compared to the Playstation version. Thank god the music isn't affected. If you thought the voiceovers for the Playstation version were bad, your definition for bad is about to change.
