Possibly the best tech demo I've played. Just don't expect anything more.

The game is decent. The physics aren't realistic in the least, despite the claims, and it doesn't let you do anything you would expect from a physics processor, such as cracking open chunks of an object to fit your needs, or blowing a hole in a crate to shoot through or other such things. All the objects have obviously preset breaking points, so that when you break apart an object using your psi-powers you simply get a predetermined chunk of that object, rather than one custom made depending on how you broke it, as was originally advertised. All physics aside, let's just simply talk about the gameplay. think half-life 2 if the weapons were more limited and more objects were tossed around the level. that's pretty much what CellFactor is. There's absolutely nothing new about this game except that you get to play around with some rather interesting new toys in the psi-department. Don't get me wrong, the game can be quite entertaining at times, and is WELL worth trying it out, considering it's a free download, it's just lacking something I can't quite put my finger on. The 3 character classes you get are hugely different and offer an interesting variation in opponents, causing you to dodge rocket launchers, flying objects, and the bishop that just snuck up behind you and blew your body into bite-sized chunks. The level designs offer some really interesting battlefields, from indoor cramped environments to open-aired free-for-alls. the objects scattered throughout for use in psi-abilities are placed well enough around the levels to provide ammo for bishops, but the stuff can get in the way at times, and even playing the flying bishop I've blocked a door off on accident before. The Graphics are rather good, and exactly what I expected to see. Unfortunately, by my understanding, if you're not using a PhysX card, the game is nigh unplayable, but that's to be expected considering it's a marketing ploy to sell PhysX processors. The Sound effects in the game are what you would expect from a game. Everything fits in with the environment and you don't get any problems with being annoyed by overly repetative sound effects at all. I notice nothing spectacular, but nothing annoying either, so I'm rather neutral in the sound department. All in all, it's a good game, it's just little more than a demo. if they were to make a legitimate game out of it it has potential to be one of the best FPSs ever, but in it's current form it leaves you wanting something more. Luckily, though, the fact that it's a free download means the price is right, so if you can't afford a new game but you're dying for something new, this is definitely worth your time. Just don't break the bank with a PhysX card to accompany the download, as the game just isn't worth the $200 for a peice of hardware that may or may not be used for other things in the future.
