A great CASUAL MMO.

Let's get one thing out of the way here: if you're looking for a new game to do some hardcore raiding and pvp: save yourself the time and money by looking elsewhere. You won't find that in Champions Online. It's simply not that kind of game and was never meant to be.

Now then, I'll get straight to it then. In terms of pros and cons I don't think Gamespot could have said it any better. The graphics are colorful and stylish, the character customization is without a doubt one of the greatest parts of the game, and the battle system is solid and fast-paced but easy enough to quickly get a hang of. And no one can doubt how awesome the ability to create your own nemesis is. And the pvp while not 'hardcore' or necessarily developed to its fullest, can be a blast.

Now for the bad, which unfortunately most people will focus on. As I mentioned at the start, this isn't an mmo for those who are really looking to burn hours upon days upon weeks upon months upon years on. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING can be soloed if the player chooses to do so. Even the endgame content (which will come quite early if you really push towards it). The latest patches have been working to encourage grouping more, but it's obvious the developers don't want to alienate the solo players and thus while encouraged, it is not a requirement for any one part of the game.

Speaking of patches. This game simply can't churn out enough of those. It really feels like the game was half-finished after a while. While its great to see that the developers are continuing to put their attention and effort into this game and actually listening to player feedback (as evidenced by an upcoming melee overhaul patch.) It really makes me think that the game still needed more time to develop and a more extensive beta testing phase before being commercially released.

Further elaborating on that point, it is worth noting that at one point in the game there was a level range in which the player would have to do the ever-so hated "grind" rather than the completion of quests or "missions" to advance. However since then a new area has been released with a slew of quests to make sure the player never has to go through that experience (again). This just goes to show how in-depth these patches are, and how much continued time and effort the developers are pumping into this game.

Regardless however. I don't see this game ever evolving beyond a certain point. Soloing will likely always be an acceptable method of playing throughout the entire game, and I have a hard time ever seeing large raids ever being made. That said however, this game is great for the more casual MMO-player. The one who just wants to play the game to have a good time, make some friends, and enjoy the game world.

The game's retail price has already fallen to $20 at major chains, so if you don't mind going without a more "hardcore" MMO experience and just want a nice distraction for a month or two, then the game is definitely worth picking up. Even if there is no long-term commitment. At least your wallet will still remain pretty full.
