A fun variation on Tetris that intertwines music and collecting blocks.
+ I really like the idea that this game is built around. Instead of falling vertical blocks like Tetris, you have the direct control over where on the board to place each uniquely shaped block. This really doesn't make things much easier, though, because the blocks need to fit together in larger rectangles before they disappear off the board and most shapes are strange enough where it is an actual puzzle to fit each new block into a solid rectangle. The thing that separates this from just being a puzzle game is how the music plays a key role in the gameplay (even having the level names be the title of the songs). There is a tall vertical line that runs across the screen at a constant speed throughout the song. Each time that line hits a collection of blocks it plays a unique stem of the song, and eventually the more blocks you have and the more rectangles you make the more the music will grow to a crescendo. It really fuels the game and keeps it interesting, and each song is picked out so they are relaxing, minimalistic, and help you zone out while your mind figures out where the best spot to place the next block is. There are a few other subtle parts to the game, like the fact that you are trying to make each cel in the level be part of a rectangle (which is possible because after the rectangle is created it disappears after a few seconds and you are allowed to place new blocks over the area). Also, when the rectangle is formed you have a few seconds to try and expand a side on the triangle, and eventually if you're good you can make the rectangle expand across the entire grid before it disappears. Finally, the cels that are left over after making a rectangle will start to decay and if you don't make them part of a new rectangle then eventually all of these leftovers are tossed off the board and you lose a big multiplier.
Story/Presentation: (N/A)
Graphics: 4/5
+ The graphics and effects are perfect for this moody and meditative game. They are simple yet calming and there is plenty of color that complements the music.
Value: 3/5
+ This is kind of tricky. The game itself is really inexpensive (not to mention that the proceeds to go charity). But the game really doesn't have much sustenance to it and after you've played all the levels a few times then you probably won't go back for more. Part of this is the repetitive gameplay, but the other reasons is the limited song selection. There are only six songs and as wonderful as they may be, you will eventually grow tired of them. If only there were a few more songs and a few more boards to go with it this game would feel more complete. Still, the game will give you a few hours of fun and for the inexpensive price it's hard to pass up.
