Feels just like the 90s, and if you wanted to play RE3.5 here's your chance!
The dialouge is just as bad/funny as the old school days of Survival Horror and it's all delivered in the same kind of way.
But thats is not why I give this game such a high score. No... I give it a high score because of it's great gameplay (and other things...). It's just like your traditional Survival Horror game (not a huge abundance of health or ammo and tough enemies that you need to take down wisely).
Gameplay: If you remember the (I believe) first video of RE4 in which Leon was in cramped hallways and it had fixed cameras combined with over the shoulder aiming. That was dubbed RE3.5. Now back to Cold Fear... Cold Fear takes THAT kind of gameplay and puts it into motion, and it works just as good as I hoped it would. Sure, you don't HAVE to use it and you can literally go through the game old style (aiming while in fixed camera) or your normal third person shooter. But I perfer to use the 3.5 gameplay because it's what i wanted :D
There's some very neat twists in this game:
You can check the bodies of what used to be humans for ammo or health. Though if a body is caught on fire, then the items they had are burned up.
The beginning half of the game that has you on the Whaling ship is VERY rocky, as in the ship rocks a **** load when you're outside, and you can get knocked off the boat, so you can hold on to rails to keep yourself on the ship, or steady your aim.
There is also some enviromental hazards you can use to kill enemies.
Graphics:
I've played the PS2 version and that as the review said, was unpolished looking. THIS on the other hand looks very great. Though the enviroments could have used some proper lighting or effects on them like some shininess :D because everyone loves shiny things, but the character models, they look great. The whole time I played the game, I had no slow downs at all.
The atmoshphere in the game was alright, it didn't make the game freaky which was kind of a drag :/
Sound:
The sound is good, none of them sound like they don't belong.
Though later in the game... I was in the room and was hearing what I though was a raptor from Jurassic Park... (weird amirite? imrite) and of course there was the decent voice acting.
Story:
You play as Tom Hansen (I call him Chris Hansen for ****s and giggles), you're part of the United States Coast Guard, you're on a boat, some stuff happens, I don't want to spoil much, but the story is ok, nothing spectacular, just ok.
Overall:
Should you try this game? HELL YEAH! but only if you are willing to take a step back to the Nostalgia Land of the late 90s when wild N64s and PS1s roamed the land feeding off of electricty whenever they were turned on.
But anyways, yeah! great game, worth checking out, a little on the short side, but that ok.
