Solid, But nowhere near perfect.
User Rating: 7.3 | Cold Winter PS2
Coldwinter is a Solid game, but seems like it missed the train in some areas. The gameplay is decent. Your character moves at pace slower and different from most fps games to date, but it seems fresh. Your guns are realistic, and you have to aim with them to get a hit, quite realistically. Explosions are good looking, but cause some Framerate problems on screen. The graphics in the game are extremely bizaar. Some objects and models in the game look well detailed and quite realistic, while others look outdated, and blocky. Environments however, always look nice. So does the enemies you kill. The death animations are well done, you will fire away at someone, watching as chunks that you shoot on their body start flying off, and blood gushes everywhere. Very gory indeed. The story of Coldwinter isn't very interesting. It seems like a James Bond Knock-off exclusively on the Playstation 2. Not very exciting up until you make it toward the end of the game where the real mission actually starts. Multiplayer is probably the best part of this game. The multiplayer has up to 8 players a game online, which is a perfect number considering the size of maps and the number of players online at a time. The offline multiplayer is nice too. It features more weapons than there actually are in the game, very nice. Sound design is where the game fails the most. It sounds like a bunch pre-played tracks with bad quality were placed in. Once you hear the sounds in games like Area 51, this really dissapoints. The voice acting is not at all great either. No one is american, and that's not bad, but the accents for characters (british, russian, indian) are not good at all. The russian ones sound almost Scottish, the british ones sound plain old fake, and the indian ones sound Chinese. Allinall, Coldwinter is a solid fps on Ps2, and you should probably play it if you just need an Fps thrill in your life very quickly.
