One of the first iterations of the Tetris killer, Columns!
Gameplay is very similar to Tetris. You must line up falling vertical columns (each consisting of 3 colors) so you match three (or more) of the same color in a row. While falling, you may cycle the blocks to change the order of the colors, though unlike Tetris, you may not rotate the blocks around physically.
This adds to both the simplicity of the game and its addictiveness. For those who think Tetris is too hard, or get frustrated after a few games, try Columns. It gets plenty difficult as you play, without the frustration that makes you want to give up on Tetris.
Visually and aurally, there's not much here. One bonus the graphics offer is the ability to change the block styles, from jewels, to blocks, to card suits, to fruits, and other shapes! This is much improved on the Genesis version, but even that version loses some of the challenge since the graphics are bigger.
For originality and addictiveness, this is the superior puzzle game to all others! The only limit here is that the game is the same no matter what, there are no variations on play, other than different levels and shapes. The versus mode is nice though, and allows for multiplayer fun!
