Just as addictive as Tetris.

User Rating: 8.1 | Columns GEN
Columns gets ripped on a lot for being a Tetris ripoff. While it has similar gameplay characteristics with blocks falling and creating lines it goes a little deeper than it shows on the surface. First of all you eliminate pieces by matching the same colors up. This can be done vertically and horizontally like Tetris but also in diagonal patterns. This allows more flexibility in how you clear your pieces. It also can lead to a series of combos that continue to eliminate several additional pieces beyond the first set you cleared. Often times this comes as a pleasant surprise and can get you out of a tight jam. Just when you think your game might be up you open up several combos and keep going. This keeps the excitement level up and makes you want to play longer. My best session stretched across a couple days of play. I would play an hour or two one day then pause it and return the next day to complete it. This racked up several million points in all. Certainly a high score that won't be touched for a long time to come. If you enjoy puzzle games at all don't hesitate to try this one out. It doesn't take long to get hooked.
