Another job lame done by Gamespot.
If you haven't played Red Alert 3 at all and need some unbiased thoughts on the game's technical specifications, check my review about the original Red Alert 3! Regarding Uprising alone, it is true that the game lost some of its charms since the previous installment, but it is still a quality expansion pack, offering not just new content, but a new way to play Red Alert 3.
I am talking about the new mode called Commander's Challenge. There you can play 50 missions which are basically skirmish battles with some twists. You can play as either of the three factions. The missions stay the same. All factions start the mode with just basic units and technologies and each challenge unlocks new units and new challenges. The goal is to unlock all technologies (finish all missions). The difficulty of these missions range from average to plain brutal and there is no save option so your strategic skills will really be stretched to the maximum. If you are really mad, there is a par time with each mission and you can even try to go beneath that, though I barely had the skill to finish the challenges in the first place. Some of the missions are really ingenious like the one where you battle for the Cryocopter technology and all the units on the map are shrunk. There is another one where satellite remains rain constantly from the sky or a mission where you will have to defend against a whole army of Yurikos.
There is not much more to say about this mode. One just has to try it. It is really engaging. Other than that, each faction has some new units but they seem a bit unbalanced. There is no stopping to the Japanese Gigafortress it seems and the Soviets get a Grinder which is as sturdy as an Apocalypse Tank and autoheals when attacking but you can rush with it in a few minutes. All these lead to Uprising dropping the multiplayer mode which is an unfortunate loss. This means no coop in story missions either. Still, if you are a Red Alert 3 fan and really want to test your skills in the new Commander's Challenge, this game is an easy recommendation. It might be too intimidating for newcomers with its difficulty, but hardened gamers will find it fun.
