User Rating: 6.5 | Companions of Xanth PC
I have been a Xanth fan for more years than I like to say (age thing), so when I heard that this game was coming out, I was very excited. This game had been previewed in a couple of Piers Anthony books, so I knew what to expect in a general way. This game is based off the Piers Anthony novel, Demons Don't Dream, and if you have read the book, you know the story of the game.

The story: You play as Dug, a guy who never met a PC game that he liked. His friend Edsel makes a bet with him: try out a new fantasy game, and if he likes it, Edsel gets to date Dug's girlfriend Pia. If he doesn't care for it, then Dug wins Edsel's motorcycle. Dug pops the disc in the computer and is immediately sucked into the world of Xanth, where puns are real and the Adult Conspiracy rules.

Gameplay: Once you can finally get your computer to actually run the game, it is a pretty user friendly set up. You do a lot of multiple choicing. There isn't a lot of action, more of a puzzle game. The key thing to remember is that Xanth is a land of puns, so if you think of the pun potential for any situation, it makes the puzzles a lot easier.

Graphics: Good for it's time. Nuff said.

This game isn't for most people. It does require a certain appreciation of puns and the world of Xanth for it to be enjoyable. It starts off with the promise that you can basically choose your own adventure, by choosing your Companion to travel with. What is not mentioned is that any choice you make that doesn't go along with what the game makers intended, pretty much leads to certain death. So what could have been a pioneer in non linear gameplay was reduced to yet another "play by the rules" experience. One last thing: There was an edition of the game that came with the book Demons Don't Dream. My version didn't have it and I feel more than a little ripped off. If nothing else it might become a collectors item for Piers Anthony fans.
