When Control first released on the last generation, I played through it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is an excellent game. I was fortunate enough to get a PS5 and shortly thereafter, the Ultimate Edition became a PS Plus title, so I was happy to play through it again.
The PS5 version offers some awesome updates to the game, such as performance and graphics modes and DualSense functionality. The last generation of consoles, you didn't really have a choice, whichever console you had let you play through it with it's default settings. On the new generation of consoles, you can choose between Ray Tracing mode and Performance Mode. Performance mode is 60fps without Ray Tracing and the Ray Tracing mode is 30fps with, well, Ray Tracing. Both are at 1440p and it looks excellent. While the RT mode is pretty great, I ultimately went with the performance mode as I preferred the 60fps. This really helped the game a lot as it reduced noticeable motion blur and some animations, such as throwing objects or the movement of the environment, making it feel fluid and more realistic. The DualSense features are superb. The gun triggers have feedback that forces you to press like it is the trigger of a real gun, which is quite immersive in all the right ways. It changes depending on the weapon mode, too. So the fully automatic spin will be slightly easier to press, but also vibrate while you shoot. For the default grip mode has a more resistant trigger, giving you a feel for the semi auto weapon. Also, your controller has the slightest vibration with your steps, making you truly feel you are in the Federal Bureau of Control's Oldest House.
The game is also improved overall, from my perspective. I originally played the game on Xbox One X. It was a great experience, but there were some noticeable problems. There was pop in on various surfaces that I couldn't help but notice. Pictures around the bureau would be blurry as I walked up to them, then slowly pop in. I noticed none of that on the PS5 version. Additionally, I don't recall any major issues with the frame rate on Xbox One X, but the 60fps mode in the ultimate edition is rock solid and I never noticed a single hitch. Animations were breath taking in the performance mode and the game looked amazing. Ray Tracing also accentuates the experience if you choose the graphics mode. I played some of the game with the RT on just to check it out. I couldn't help noticing how amazing it was. Reflections are incredible and the gloss of a picture frame or on the marbled floors of the FBC are immersive and beautifully done.
While the game is vastly improved, the core game is still the same. There are still some obnoxious side activities, like bureau alerts, that are kind of annoying. They are optional, but the way the text appears in the middle of the screen each time one pops up can be distracting, especially when you are in the middle of combat. The Board Countermeasures can be handy for item drops, but can sometimes feel a little repetitive. Especially if you are trying to get a better item buff and you just keep getting the same ones. Fortunately, these are optional and in no major way impact your enjoyment of the game and the overall action and story are preserved and incredibly good.
On Xbox One X, I enjoyed the game so thoroughly I got every achievement available (prior to the DLC release). Last night on PS5, I picked up the platinum trophy. It is an excellent game and revisiting it on the new generation of hardware brought me the kind of entertainment only the best of games can give me. If you were lucky enough to get it on PS Plus, play it. If you are interested in the game, pick it up. It is one of the best out there.
