One of the most creative puzzlers to date, but still feels a little lacking.

Crush takes the innovation that Super Paper Mario set fourth and really pushes it to the extreme. The whole game is based on swapping between a 2D and 3D perspective to collect things and travel through levels.

The art of "crushing" is literally flatening the 3D world your in, into a 2D one. When you do this the world turns into a totally different place. The best way to describe it is really with an example. If you're on a single platform and there is one to the right of you, but 100 feet back so that you can't just jump on it, simply crush and the 2 platforms will be right next to each other because that backwards axis is dropped out. Hopefully that makes sense.

The game has a lot more content than I expected. There are four worlds each packed with something like 20 stages to work through. They vary in difficulty from fairly easy to extremely difficult. I'm sure this is also slightly dependent on your ability to look at the world and crush it in your mind while figuring out where to go. Also, trying to collect everything makes it a much more difficult adventure. The gameplay doesn't exactly feel outstanding, but it feels pretty good. I have a personal grievance with the PSP nub which is what you'll be using to navigate around and found that some jumps were fairly difficult to make due to not quite perfect views and the fact that how far you jump varies based on how far you push the nub. I think this is a problem with most platforming style obstacles in games though. The game also tries to incorporate a bit of a story, but I think it may have been better off without it. It's mediocre at best, although the cutscenes it tells the story through have a real nice comic style look about them and it even features voice acting. All in all I wish the game would have actually toned down the difficulty on some stages because I found it to be off-putting and had a hard time pushing forwards due to being stuck for long periods of time. However, if you're looking for a real hardcore challenge you should be able to find it here. Aside from that the game is designed well and all the pieces are here to make a really creative game.

For PSP owners there's probably room in your collection to slide in Crush and prove to the gaming industry that original ideas can succeed!
