I have never made any secret of the fact that I didnt warm to Crysis. It wasnt a bad game, but it cetainly didnt justify the hype that was expended upon it. It was buggy to the extreme and the second half was a major disappointment after some great gameplay in the earlier portion. However, Crysis 2 remedies those faults and then some. There are no bugs (Yay!) and it is is enthralling & immersive from beginning to end. Its one of the best FPS games I have played, probably since Half-Life 2 or the first FEAR. The combat is intense, the AI is exceptional and it will keep you going & entertained from go to woe. Some of the little touches were wonderful. like how the aliens were able to sense you in some way if you came too close to them while cloaked. About the only major flaw with the game was the lousy checkpoint placement, which would have you playing through up to 10 minutes of fierce combat, getting killed and finding yourself right back at the start. This was particularly bad in some of the game's big setpieces, such as the epic fight in the plaza against scores of aliens & a couple of mechs. At other times, infuriatingly, when you were travelling between areas and with no enemy in sight, you would have several checkpoints in the space of a few minutes. I dont like checkpoints, I never have, its a lazy way of upping a game's difficulty, takes away your control of the experience, leads to endless frustration and can leave you with nothing to show for a piece of good play through sheer mischance. But there are checkpoints & there are checkpoints and this game, unfortunately, misses out of a perfect rating because of a little lack of thought in their placement.
