Crysis 3

Recently I jumped into the nano-suited 'Prophet' of Crysis 3 - I had heard good things about the sci-fi FPS and wanted to find out for myself if Crytek's third instalment to the series could live up to the hype I had heard.

Being a newcomer to Crysis I found that I was welcomed with open arms as a new player; there are tutorial options in the menu in order to acquaint me with my new nano-suit as well as a "Previously on Crysis" section that informs newcomers to the series of the story so far - these little touches give a good impression before you even get into the meat of the gameplay experience which some games fail to deliver on.

As for the core gameplay I found Crysis to be a breath of fresh air from the standard FPS' we are used to - COD, Battlefield etc. - although it adopts some the same 'run and gun' elements as these titles it does however have an optional stealth route to clear each area. The downside to this is that I use the term 'stealth' loosely - yes you can go invisible and clear a room with your bow but it seems that enemies would always be alerted in some way even if I remained undetected. This could be down to my own play style but I often look for the 'ghost' way of doing things anyway so it's apparent there is no depth to the stealth system. When you're not sneaking, however, you're tearing s*** up! There's a certain satisfaction that comes with armouring up and sprinting through a group of enemies - be it soldiers or ceph - and gunning them down with one of the many weapons scattered about the levels.

Story wise I couldn't get immersed. This may be because I'm new to the series - in which case I wish I had jumped in sooner - but I found it to be drab and uninteresting. I'm not sure how much of a connection we're supposed to have with the character 'Psycho' but for me he was just a stereotypical Brit with an overbearing cockney accent and potty mouth. This is the one thing that really grated on me and is the reason why I found myself not caring about the character at all.

Crysis 3 is an okay game at best. It's certainly a well needed breath of fresh air in the FPS genre but it lacks any depth in the areas where it differs from the mainstream titles. If you're looking to jump into a new game series instead of just one game I would recommend going back and starting with Crysis 1 or 2 before getting stuck in with this sci-fi shooter.
