Cyber Speedway Story: Cyber Speedway has always been on my list of favorite games. It's got a cool story line. The game is set far in the future. You assume the role of Clay Shaw, an Earthling who is driving a hovercraft in a universe-wide sled racing tournament called "Cyber Speedway". The game sets you up nicely by having a great anime-esqe intro scene. Modes: There are 2 different game modes, Story mode and Free Run Mode. Story mode takes you through the game as Clay Shaw, defending Earth. Free Run mode allows you to race against another player or the computer; you can even run time trials to better yourself on each track. Courses: Each race takes place on a different planet, providing for a different course set up. There are 6 courses in all. A rather meager offering, but each course is different from the others. One course may require a sled with better steering, or one with faster acceleration, etc. Vehicles: There are 5 hovercraft sleds in the game. They are not all available to you at the beginning of the game though. You must win races to gain access to them. (Note: In Free Run mode all sleds and course are available to play.) Graphics: I will not speak technically on the graphics since the Saturn is outdated anyway. I will, however, talk about the creative aspects of graphics. Unfortunately, Cyber Speedway leaves much to be desired in this area. The interlude scenes between races are simply the same template with different colors splashed around. The characters are still pictures, as are the backgrounds. The sleds are not very detailed in design. I have drawn better pictures of hovercrafts on napkins than what you are given to play, but they work. Sound: The sound also could use some touch-ups. All the background music is done by a real band called Bygone Dogs. And for a video game, the music really rocks. The bad thing is the music is played so softly in the background, you can barely hear it! The sound effects are tuned way too loud. Sadly, there is no way to adjust this poor volume allocation. Gameplay: The gameplay is pretty solid all-around. When you are zipping through the courses, you actually feel like you're speeding down the tracks (unlike Cruisin World for N64, *cough cough*). Each course gives you some challenges, basic as they may be. You might have to take a corner a bit slower, but I have never had to brake for any turn. Though the game is easily beaten and thus short-lived, Cyber Speedway is a fun racing title that deserves a fair chance.
Cyber Speedway was obscure even when it had just come out, it seems. I must've introduced this baby to a bunch of people and the response was not suprising: this game is fun. The controls took you a minute to learn, the ... Read Full Review
