Best DDR home game yet.

User Rating: 9.8 | Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2 PS2
DDR has been around for a very long time. It was one of the first rhythm games, and it's still going strong today with (in my opinion) the best DDR home game yet. Kudos, Konami. After that disappointment of Extreme, Konami has finally pulled it together.
For those of you who don't know what DDR is and/or are looking to get started into the music genre of video games, look no further. DDR is a simple game that anyone can play. Four arrows move to the top of the screen, whereas then you need to hit them. this is a lot harder than it sounds, as you have jumps, gallops, freeze arrows, fast songs, slow and hard to read songs, etc. There different songs that will require you to develop different types of skills, like fast reaction time, quick feet, knowing how to play off-beat song, reading close together arrows, etc. This is a great song to play if you want to lose song weight, have fun, work out while having fun, or all of the above!

There are a multitude of modes in DDR. The newly introduced mode is Dance Master Mode (DMM) which requires you to beat songs of certain difficulties with certain requirements. This can range from just pass the song to get OK on all freeze arrows to just hit all the blue notes. DMM mode will test all the skills that you (hopefully) developed in free play mode, which is the next mode.

In free play mode, you can just play random songs that you want. This is the best mode, in my opinion, because there isn't any pressure. You just have fun. you can play on any difficulty you want, with whatever options you want. options are little things that modify the songs to your liking. they add a little extra pep into the game.

There is also course courses, which is where you play more than one song without stopping, and each song has preset difficulties and options. There nonstop mode, which is where you just play through all the songs, oni (challenge) mode, which is where you have four lives. If you get a bad step, you lose a life. Once you run out of lives, you're done. There's also combo challenge mode, which is like challenge mode, but with only one life. The last of these modes in endless, which is where you keep playing on a certain difficulty that you choose until you fail.

For you weight watchers out there, there's a work out mode, which is where you set settings according to how long you want to work out, how many calories you want to burn, etc. You can either play courses or free play on this mode, and it basically stops once you meet your goal

The newest mode is Online mode. you basically play online with a random person on a random song. However, I did not like online mode. You can't communicate with the players, and you can't even choose who you're playing with! Online doesn't have that much to offer.

Sound is what this game is all about. There are over 70 songs in this game, and there is something for everyone. The songs sound great, and they make you want to play them over and over again. It's really fun to hit the arrows to the beat of the song.

Graphics aren't really that important in a music game, but they're strong nonetheless. Each song has beautiful backrounds while you play, which is a little more entertaining that just playing again a black screen. The arrows also look very smooth, which is good, because you have to see what to step on to step on it. There's also characters, but they do nothing other than dance on the screen. They don't really look that great anyway.

This game practically has infinite replayability. the songs are great, you never get tired of them, and you're inspired to keep getting better and better. However, there's also a shop, which is where you can buy songs after playing through DMM. There also courses and costumes for the characters, but if you don't like the characters, this really doesn't matter. Even after you've unlocked everything, this game could still last you however you want. If you want some good music, want to work out, get more coordinated, or anything having to do with toning your skills, this is the game for you.
