Great Exercise

User Rating: 8.8 | Dance Dance Revolution Extreme PS2
This year I had been introduced to DDR for the very first time. I was at a friend's party, and a bunch of kids were stepping on these bizarre pads, while I was watching in complete confusion. Later, during the summer, I had been reintroduced at work (that's right, work haha) but I had finally decided to give it a try. Obviously I started out on beginner, but quickly I had gone through the difficulties all the way through heavy. I never had known DDR could be this addictive, but I was wrong. It's probably the most enjoyable way to exercise, and good for conditioning, especially for XC.

Graphics: 6

Graphics aren't really all the important in DDR games as long as they don't interrupt with the arrows. Unfortunately, some songs have backgrounds that interfere with the arrows, and it could get frustrating at times. Apart from that, the graphics are plain, and simplistic, but also aren't a problem. The frame rates aren't an issue, which is extremely important because that could interrupt with your whole "groove" which is hard to get back into at times. The character models aren't really detailed, and the polygon count is low, so it would be nicer if Konami had at least made the characters a little more realistic instead of making them look like blocks, but that's only for extra thrills. As far as the necessary aspects in terms of graphics, DDR Extreme has most of the essentials, although it would be nicer if the backgrounds weren't as distracting.

Controls: ?

Controls are perfect....as long as you have the correct pads. If you get roll-up pads, you shouldn't expect to get great results. Ignition pads are amazing, as they are sensitive, but metal pads are considered the real deal. I personally prefer the ignition pads as the foam support decreases the stress that's put on your feet from so much stepping, and they are sensitive enough most times. Whatever you do, don't get a roll-up pad as they are insensitive, unresponsive, move around while you're dancing, and break extremely easily.

Sound: 8

Sound is the absolutely most important aspect in any DDR game. Without any good music, you have no motivation to play the game, but good music makes the game even more addictive. Some songs are great, but there are a bunch that are pretty much torture to dance to (the beat is hard to recognize). Anyways, the sounds are great, and there are many amazing and addictive songs, but it's the ones that are terrible that almost ruin the experience.

Gameplay: 10

Do I really need to explain. DDR is addictive, an enjoyable way to exercise, and really captures the gamer. You never would've thought that dancing could be so much fun, but it truly is (if you consider it dancing). DDR Extreme captures the same gameplay as previous DDR games, which is it is very worthy of receiving a 10 in terms of gameplay.

Overall: 8.8

DDR Extreme is an amazing experience, but there are better DDR games in the series. If the soundtrack was improved, than the game would be much better, but the soundtrack for Extreme doesn't have too many issues. You'll find yourself humming some of the pieces they're so catchy. This game is a must buy for anybody who has a PS2. I also recommend purchasing the ignition pads, as they are the most affordable ones, as well as the best ones.
