One of the most aggravating and whorish shooters I've ever played
User Rating: 2 | Dark Sector X360
Dark sector is a game that tried be a mixed bag. A mish-mash of the best parts of the best shooters around at the time. Instead it came off as an airline sick bag that's already got so much sick in it that the majority of the puke chunks landed on your lap. It takes things that used to be original and slaps them into generic cliches. The game could have been good but it decided to have no regard for its audience. The game starts out in a bleak stylized island as a spy that has to take down some Russians or something like that. The story isn't the point here and characters will be randomly introduced in all the cut scenes but that's not why its a bad game. Its a bad game because it shows you its potential coolness and then takes it away never to be returned. The first chapter is played out like a regular shooter and for what it is its pretty good. The black and white effect works well and it almost seems like your playing a more Russian version of splinter cell. Then oh no you've become infected, mission botched, unconscious, evil villain, enter the sci-fi aspect. This is where two things are introduced, the glaive (the awesome kill boomerang that's attached to your arm) and the black market (abducted straight out of resident evil 4). It gradually gets worse and worse when in later chapters the glaive becomes useless against enemies stronger than a stuffed animal, the weapons get extremely expensive and the puzzles are introduced. My god are these puzzles retarded. Its nice to see puzzle making that's not just a rehash of zelda but do they have to be so damn frustrating? Its like the game just tells you to bugger off when you need help. You'll get stuck for 15 minutes at a time just trying to find this one tiny shiny thing that was off in some extremely dark corner. Oh and the game tricks you. Its like it keeps shuffling between shooter, sci-fi, and horror. One minute I'll be battling some haz-mat henchmen, and then all of a sudden the lights go out and zombies are coming my way, and once I've gotten through the shock of that I'm fighting a mech. It could at least try to be consistent, don't throw a curve ball and combine three genres into a sloppy mess. Its just a frustrating game that tried to be the all-star and fell flat on its face while misunderstanding the word fun.
