The idea had potential, but all that was lost somewhere in the mix. Uncharted + Halo - Lots of good stuff = Dark Void.
The graphics are acceptable, but nothing special. The music tries to sound epic but is so repetitive that it just comes across as dull. The jet pack is lots of fun to play around with, once you get the hang of the controls (aiming while hovering takes lots of practice). Well-executed stunts are fun, as are melee take-downs of the aliens. Hijacking UFOs is fun whenever the game doesn't decide to spontaneously chuck said UFO into a wall during the take-over. Speaking of which, I should say that there are random deaths a-plenty in Dark Void. I can't tell you how many times I've been shot by a guy who wasn't there, or trapped in an explosion by a glitch that wouldn't let me run on open ground, or (and here's my favorite part) the game suddenly cut from an action sequence to a loading screen, which then set me back at the most recent checkpoint as if I'd died.
All in all, while most of what I've had to say about this game has been negative, it is worth at least a rental. Just be prepared for some frustrating moments and a constant, glaring reminder that "borrowing" from other, highly successful game franchises such as Halo and Uncharted does not always work like a dream.
