Challenging puzzles, average combat, decent story, all combine for an overall solid game

User Rating: 8.5 | Darksiders PS3
Darksiders seems to get compared to Zelda a lot. Having not played Zelda, I can only assume it is because of the environments and the puzzles. The puzzles are varied and challenging, and make use of the new tools/weapons you get in each zone. There is a sense of satisfaction with some of them upon completion. Others are unnecessarily tedious and repetitive, leading to groans as I would open each new door.

Darksiders also seems to get compared to God of War a lot. This is due to the combat. Though in that case, I guess all 3rd person action games should be compared to God of War. The combat in Darksiders is relatively simplistic. You have one combo chain, you can mash square over and over and come out on top. I rarely died in this game due to regular combat. Bosses in this game are also simplistic. They have one pattern that they repeat over and over. Figure out the pattern (always involving the puzzle solving tool you've been using in the zone leading up to it), and it becomes a cakewalk.

The story starts strong but soon degrades. A lot of the later stuff just seems to be setup for the inevitable sequel.

Overall Darksiders was fun, took up a little bit of my time. I would purchase the follow up, but for now I will be trading this back in for credit towards Mass Effect 2.
