Darksiders is a post-apocalyptic game like you have never seen before: Biblical
Darksiders has that allure as well, but on a much greater level: what you're playing through here is the dominant religion of the Western World. Darksiders mixes fun, fast-paced gaming with the Book Of Revelations, creating an uneasily real feel.
You play as War, one-dimensional rider of the apocalypse charged with destroying the kingdom of man before it had a chance to fight back.In order to redeem yourself and seek out the truth, you return to earth, albeit stripped of most of your powers.
Within the first fifteen minutes of the game, all the world is dead. All our world, anyway, the world of man. The Apocalypse has come and gone, and all that's left is to find out why.
The Truth lies in the Black Tower, which only Samael can help you reach. He won't assist you without the Heart's of the four chosen, powerful demons which are scattered across the earth.
These demons are powerful, maybe too powerful for War to handle without his powers-but as your going for their hearts, you can't exactly strike a deal. So off you go, through the demons and hollow echoes of what humanity was.
As your name is War, you would probably guess a good portion of the game was going to involve bloody combat. And you'd be right, this is one of the game's strong points. Though the ability to string combos together and seek out the weaknesses of foes is important, so too is preparation, deciding which weapons to use and which enchantments to equip them with is half the battle.
And what a battle it is, with War's weapons doing devastating and awesome-looking combos. A great feature is the "Instant Kill" mechanism. When enough of an enemy's health has gone down (indeed, weaker enemies can be Instant Killed strait away), they can be taken in out with a single button.
Weather War is abandoning his sword to shoulder a skeleton to oblivion or slicing the wings off an angel, these look absolutely awesome, a credit to the designers.
Combat is even more impressive in the Boss Battles, which often incorporate the puzzles of the earlier level, such as using a bladed boomerang to carry a spark from a flaming torch to a dormant bomb in order to ignite the fuse.
Boss battles are difficult, not because the enemy has uber attacks or an unfair life bar, but because they require intelligence and creativity to best. And once you do defeat them, your treated to some of the best cutscenes the video game industry has ever known.
All in all, Darksiders is a credit to the Post-Apocalyptic genre.
