Castlevannia: Wild West Style

User Rating: 8 | Darkwatch XBOX
Ah, the Outlaw Cowboy, a staple of our childhood, the original hardcore anti hero. Back in the days before video games the Outlaw Cowboy would thrill kids every day at either the local theater to Disney's Davy Crocket on Television. Latley though the Western Genre is trying to stage a comeback, and Darkwatch helps the genre along by adding a new twist to the classic Western story.

Darkwatch is set in the Arizona Territory in 1876, and follows the story of Outlaw Jericho Cross, who during a botched train robbery becomes infected with Vamperism after being attacked by the Vampire Lazarus. What Jericho failed to realise is that the train belonged to the Darkwatch, a group of Vampire Hunters, and as a result of his actions Jericho is reluctantly indoctronated into the Darkwatch.

The first thing you will notice when playing the game is that this isn't a typical western, since the enemy you face is the Undead, instead of a gang of outlaws or corrupt government officals, the game's enemies come in a wide varity and difficulty ranging from the typical zombie to full fledge vampires. The game's other strong point is it's wide variety of weapons, many of which include a devistating meele attack. While the game's repetivtive game play, is somewhat improved thanks to the dark atmosphere the graphice provide. However the game's best feature are it's missions that involve riding on horseback.

Outside of these improvements, Darkwatch sufferes from a been there done that feel, owing to repetivie gameplay, which is typical FPS running around blasting zombies until you complete your objective. The other major flaw the game has is it's graphics, though they add a much needed darker tone to the game, they look rather bland.

Dispite it's flaws, Darkwatch is a very fun game, and will appeal to fans of First Person Shooters and Westerns in general.
