Your standard FPS with some pretty cool vampire powers thrown in.
User Rating: 6.9 | Darkwatch PS2
The thought of playing a first person shooter in a Western setting with demons and monsters sounded pretty interesting the first time I heard it. Vampire powers made the game sound even better. The problem with Darkwatch is that not only is it too short, but it gets boring by the end. Gameplay All the controls worked pretty well, however I'm not a fan of the having to press forward and in on the left analog stick to move while crouching. It didn't let you customize your controls either, no surprise. The melee attack worked surprisingly well; in most games the melee function isn't really effective and I never use it. In Darkwatch i used it all the time. Double jumping in an FPS is a lot of fun, especially with the serious air time you get, and a certain button will cancel your jump if it takes too long. AI was good at times, but, of course, stupid as well. Snipers would be standing right in the middle of a road while getting shot. Banshees would be hovering in the air doing nothing while I shot rockets at them. The blood vision was really cool; it was basically night vision that was red and white. The powers were also fun to use and easy to fill up the bar once you used one. Graphics Definitely some problems here that some people might not care about. Character movements in the cinematics were choppy and stiff. The environments were all kind of bland with not much detail and not much color, although it was a dark story. Textures were okay, but the character movements and reactions really needed some attention. Sound There wasn't much music in this game that I can really remember. I guess that means either there wasn't any or it wasn't very good. Voice acting was decent, even though it didn't match the people's mouths at times. The main girl who was on your side kept talking to you the whole game and that was annoying more than helpful. The monsters had some pretty good sound effects. Value The game only took me 5 hours and 10 minutes to beat, which is very short. There are a few different courses the story can take judging by choices you make in the game, but nothing worth playing the game over again. I only managed to get 5 out of the 8 powers, which was kind of a bummer, and I guess that may add to the replay value a tad. There is no online mode which pretty much killed the value, especially since the Xbox version has it, and no extra mini games, either. There is split screen multiplayer, but who does that anymore? Also, there is only one extra video and it's ten seconds of concept art. Tilt Overall, the game wasn't as bad as this score may make it seem. The problems this game had kept bugging me to the point where I didn't wanna play near the end. Since I like FPS's, though, I kept playing and was glad i gave this game a try. I would definitely say not to buy this game and just give it a week rental to beat it if you like shooting games.
