Daxter is a great portable game, that makes killing bugs over and over again enjoyable.
The Bad: Daxter's Voice can be grating, you kill the same bugs over and over again.
The Ugly: Very few boss battles, over too soon.
There are two well known sci-fi platformers that dominated the PlayStation 2: Jak & Daxter, and Ratchet & Clank. The first of these two series to get the PSP treatment was Jak & Daxter, in the form of Daxter, and company Ready At Dawn (most famous for God of War: Chains of Olympus) does a fantastic job on all fields.
The games story may be a giant cliche, but it is fun to play through. Daxter brings a nice element of humor to the whole thing, (although nothing on the level of The Simpsons Game, or Secret Agent Clank) even though the voice can get annoying at points. You'll survive, so long as you don't listen to it with the volume turned all the way up. The cutscenes do great justice to this, and look more cinematic and beautiful than any game I own. (That said, I don't own GOW: COO.)
Gameplay in Daxter shares an equal part of the spotlight, as the series returns to its roots of basic platforming. The idea is pulled off well, as the set puzzles break up what would otherwise be a pretty bland round of bug squishing. The graphics are equally as amazing during the game as during the cutscenes, showing all objects in a vibrant, colorful style.
The main complaint with Daxter is how short it is, with the story mode coming in at about less than 10 hours. However, there is a lot to unlock here. Unlike other games, where unlocking items is there for the sake of adding replay value, this game offers items you'd want to get, like concept art, game trailers, and a behind the scenes video, making Daxter's secrets feel more like a bonus features menu than something you'd find in a game. This same out of place feeling can describe the whole game, as it feels like it would be more at home at a console than a portable system. I truly cannot wait to try Ready at Dawn's other titles.
