Portable 3-D platforming at its best!

User Rating: 10 | Daxter PSP
Daxter takes the prize so far as the best game on the PSP.

The graphics are top-notch, in-game and the cutscenes near blew me away. It's easy to forget that you're playing on the PSP and not on the PS2 when you look over the wonderfully animated and expressive face of Daxter and his co-stars in this delightful prequel to Jak 2.

It fills in the gap perfectly between the first and second Jak games and answers any questions that you might've had.

What really makes this shine though, is it is not a port! What I mean by this is, this IS a Daxter game and NOT a Jak game. Daxter has his own set of moves and maneuvers that are unique to him.

The humor from the original trilogy was kept intact as well, with Daxter just as womanizing and wise-cracking as ever. Speaking of which, the voice-overs are near flawless except for a couple minor characters that you encounter.

Loading times, usually a problem on the PSP, are kept to a minimum here despite the large areas because most of the loading takes place behind the scenes during gameplay. This causes some frame rate slowdown but only happens upon entering a new area so it doesn't really affect gameplay.

During certain scenes in the game, there is some slowdown, primarily the final boss battle of the game early on where the entire floor is electrocuted and he is tossing fireballs at you, but most the time it stays pretty smooth and constant.

The difficulty level is good, considering there is a lot to do to get a 100% but if you just want to breeze through the game it should be relatively simple.

The dream sequences could've used more variety. Most seemed to be the same game but just set to a different setting/movie. It was nice to see Daxter decked out in his Matrix duds and paying homage to Gandalf the Grey.

If you own a PSP, this is one game that you should definitely pick up. Congratulations to Ready at Dawn for making one helluva platformer.
