The WW2 brother of Counter-Strike. Just a masterpiece.

User Rating: 9 | Day of Defeat: Source PC
DOD: S is a definite pickup from the stores or on Steam. The game is half serious gameplay and half amazing community. It is actually hard to explain how the game works, but like most huge multiplayer releases it is really addictive. Of course it's frustrating at points, but that's online for you.

Multiplayer: 10/10. This is truly a stunning value that draws you in everyday. Multiplayer is the only choice in this game, so internet is required. Valve gave it their all when working on this game, and it really came up great. Maybe it seems that all the good servers get crammed often but it really is rare.

Community: 9/10. This is quite the odd rating. It just seemed right though. At times the community can be irritable; spamming, camping class menu, etc. Still I find most of Day of Defeat's people are friendly. They give you ammo when you ask for it; they cover you, listen to you, and even add you as a friend.

Game Modes: 9.5/10. Capture the Flag is really straight-forward. The game has 5 flags setup on various places depending on which map and server you play on. Each team starts with two of their own flags, which can be taken by the other team. If a team captures all 5 flags on the map, they win. Sometimes it takes a short period of time to capture a flag, sometimes it takes an instant, and sometimes it requires multiple players. The middle flag is always neutral, and the first team to take control of it automatically has the higher morale.

The Search and Destroy mode consists of two teams, one of which has a TNT pile on their side. Every player has the ability to pick up TNT. The objective is to bring yourself and the TNT to the bombing point. This could be a vehicle, maybe something else. You then plant the bomb with the instructions it gives you. It could take time to blow up, so defend it carefully.

Different servers have different game modes but those two are probably the most common. There are pretty odd servers like Left 4 Dod. In this game mode you can choose to be the US Army, defending yourselves against the ravenous zombie horde. If you choose to be the Wehrmacht you could be the never ending zombie attackers along with many bots.

Classes: 9/10. The different flesh-beating weapons from World War 2 really bring out a deadly force. You can choose from 6 different classes, all different weapons. I'll start with the US Army's weapons.

Riflemen – Springfield rifle, two rifle grenades and a butterfly knife.

Assault – Thompson Sub Machine Gun, a Colt M1911, one smoke grenade and one fragmentation grenade.

Support – M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, two fragmentation grenades and a butterfly knife.

Sniper – Scoped Springfield rifle, a Colt M1911 and a butterfly knife.

Machine Gunner – Browning .30 caliber machine gun, a Colt M1911 and a butterfly knife.

Rocket – Bazooka, M1A1 Carbine rifle and a butterfly knife.
Next up will be the Wehrmacht's arsenal.

Riflemen – K98k rifle, two rifle grenades and a shovel.

Assault – MP40 Sub Machine Gun, a Walther P38, one smoke grenade and one Model 24 Stielhandgranate.

Support – STG44, two Model 24 Stielhandgranates and a shovel.

Sniper – Scoped K98 Rifle, a Walther P38 and a shovel.

Machine Gunner – MG42, Walther P38 and a shovel.

Rocket – Panzerschreck, Mauser M712 and a shovel.
This here is the entire selection of weapons brought to you in this game.

Graphics: 9/10. For the games time and generation the graphics are really fantastic. Valve isn't the company that often takes the cake for graphics, but they delivered great graphics with this game. The scenery helps you visualize how the area would really come to be in World War 2. The character models aren't too shabby and you can easily tell the difference between a German and an American without looking at their name.

Music and Sounds: 8.5/10. The audio in this game is fantastic. Real war sounds are brought to your ears when putting on your headphones, or just listening to your speaker. Each character has an NPC voice when calling a medic, throwing a grenade or shouting a command. Its downside is the lack of great music. The game makes up for it with realism in audio.

Now finally I will present you with...
The Pros and Cons!

Pros
insane multiplayer
great weaponry
friendly community
realistic sounds and voices
top-notch graphics

Cons
no great music
teammates can be arrogant
servers can get crammed

Overall Mean Score: 9.16. Rounded to 9.0. I strongly recommend you buy this game at a local store or on Steam.
