Modes: There are 3 modes in Daytona USA: Arcade, Saturn, & Time Lap. In Arcade mode, you race 40 opponents within an alloted amount of time. Passing a checkpoint puts more time on the clcok. Saturn mode simply takes the clock out of the picture. Also in this mode, you can access Mirror mode (which I'm not counting as a full mode) to race on a mirrored version of each track. Woo. The third mode is the standard Time Lap to challenge and beat your own lap time records. Courses: There are 3 tracks to choose from: beginner, advanced, and expert. Mirror mode adds opposite turns to these same tracks. Vehicles: You get your choice of 3 cars to crash drive. You also have the option of driving an automatic or a stick with each car. Graphics: For the Saturn, graphics are pretty good in Daytona USA. Unfortunately, there's a lot of pop-up. This isn't a huge deal, but pop-up is very annoying nonetheless. Sound: The volume level of the background music and the sound effects is great in D-USA. It's just that the background music sucks like a Hoover vacuum. If I hear "Steady Roller" one more time I'm gonna smash something. Something expensive. It's a shame Sega Sports didn't pick better music. Grunge or hard rock or something that wuld get your adrenaline pumping. When it all boils down, music can really determine the fun factor of a game. And things don't look too good for D-USA when I play it with the TV on mute and MxPx in my cd player. Gameplay: Control is okay in this game. Not great, but not bad either. Sometimes you can round a turn that ideally you should've had to brake on, and sometimes you have to brake on a turn that is about as sharp as a dull butterknife. But this occurs in just about every racing game. I'm really disappointed though by the meager supply of tracks in Daytona USA. Three tracks is just not enough. To worsen the matter, there are no hidden tracks or secret cars to unlock, so there isn't much reply value. But all things in perspective, this is a decent racing title to add to your Saturn library. The funnest part of the whole game is getting a friend to race with you on the advanced course and having one of you drive the wrong way and crash into each other at full speed. It's the greatest thing! Especially if you have been up almost 24 hours playing video games, drinking nothing but Pepsi floats, and are very very giddy. Uh...hypothetically speaking, of course.
