Simply Brilliant. A review by Liquid_Snake92 on DOA Ultimate

User Rating: 9.6 | Dead or Alive Ultimate XBOX
To be calling itself ultimate is a brave thing, but it works in the latest entry of the infamous Dead Or Alive fighting series.
Gameplay is the most important aspect of a game, and can make it or break it. You will see your standard Story mode, the character's "story" being told. The "stories" of the characters are lackluster and boring, containing nothing but a sequence of fights leading to that character's revenge, self-discovery, or reconnection with the past. It doesn't make a phenomenal amount of sense, but come on. It's a fighting game people! If you want an 80-hour adventure filled with twists, meaning, and is even remotely interesting, get any RPG on the market. Beating a character's story on different difficulty levels unlock numerous and hilarious costumes for that person. There are also time attack, survival, team battle, and tag battle. Their names imply what they offer, so I won't go into detail on those. Seeing as this is a remake of the second DOA, you would think there would be lots of tweaks to gameplay. Whereas this game plays very much like DOA 3, it does have some new draws. For example, the counter system is tighter and more responsive. Now, all you need to do is simply press X and a direction when your opponent punches or kicks. They'll be screaming in pain in seconds. Aside from that, I found that characters were more suited to their fighting styles. Leon's attacks are slow and powerful and Kasumi's are quick but do little. In the past iterations, I personally felt as if some characters were too strong, or too weak, but they feel right at home here. Aside from that, the fighting is pretty much the same, but is that a bad thing? I say it's a wonderful thing that DOA Ultimate sticks to its roots. There is also an online mode, but I did not sample it, so will offer no comment.
Graphics are another big part of a game and these are the best graphics I've seen in a long time. They make you go, "Halo who? Doom what?" Clothes sway and flow with the wind and movement, character's hands react when punching or taking a punch, and you can practically count the characters' strands of hair. Refer to screenshots for complete details.
The ounds nothing special. Your usual fare of screams, thrusts, heaves, hoes, grunting, etc... Although these sounds aren't big deals, they sound as if they were the number one priority of the team. Characters will give the appropriate grunt when nailed in the stomach, an ear-screeching scream when thrown from 10 stories up, and the wind knocked out of them when kicked maliciously in the head. There are supposed to be some Aerosmith songs, but I never really heard them. The only time I did was during the opening cutscene. Japanese dialogue is, thankfully, still here. There are a lot of witty saying when you just threw somebody of a building, only to have their face eating dirt moments later. Brings a tear to my eye every time.
If you're a fan of the series, or looking for your next thrill, this game has it all. The great modes, characters, fighting system, graphics, sound, and an undeniable charm. This pack also includes the first DOA, for those longing to reminisce on their childhood. That's all there is to it. If you don't buy this game, you should be kicked off a buiding by a Japanese guy in pajamas. Snake out.
