Too Linear

User Rating: 3.5 | Dead Space (2008) PC
My biggest pet peeve in any computer game is what I call "forced linear gameplay". It is one thing to drop someone into a scenario, give them objectives, then let them use their own tactics and strategies to accomplish those. And quite another to force players to reinact some dry Hollywood-style cutscenes, scene after scene to the point in which the player feels the devs are playing the game and not the player.

You enter the first room and all of the doors are artifically sealed until you play out the "be surprised and scared scene". Then you are allowed to go only so far down the hallway in front of you until you act out the second "be surprised and scared scene". And this goes on and on and on as if the gameplay is on railroad tracks.

You probably know what I am talking about. Well, "Dead Space" comes across as that sort of game. You are not wandering around a haunted space ship so much as acting out some dev's prescripted drama. Not fun the first time through, certainly has zero replay value.
