One of the best games of its time!

User Rating: 9.5 | Defender of the Crown C64
"Defender Of The Crown" for Commodore 64 is an addictive and very fun, turn based strategy game, set in Medieval England of the 12th century. At the beginning the player chooses their character between four Saxon lords, each with different capabilities and weaknesses. The next screen, which is the game's main screen, is a map of England, divided into provinces. You start with a castle in one of these provinces, an army with some soldiers, and a few gold. What you must do in the game is conquer other territories, and gradually expand your rule into more provinces, until you conquer the entire map, which is your ultimate goal of the game.

Basically, the game play core of "Defender of the Crown" is to properly manage your kingdom's gold, by defending your acquired provinces, and gradually conquer new ones. Besides the turn- based game on the map, there are three other modes that randomly occur as "mini games": participating in a tournament with other knights giving jousting matches, raiding a castle, and saving the princess. To be honest I never quite understood the controls for these modes, so I usually skip them, since they are not mandatory for the progress of the game, but they can prove really helpful for your main quest, if you master the controls that is.Espesially the rescue of the princess is quite.. "rewarding" for the player (as I saw on You-Tube)

Game's graphics for C64 were revolutionary for its time, (but poor compared to the Amiga and Atari ST versions). Music is also quite matching, putting you in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. What's more incredible about this game is that it hasn't lost any of its charm until today; in fact it's still playable. If you can find it in some abandon-ware site, don't miss it!
