By now everyone on the planet has heard about the lack of a story in Destiny, and what you've heard is basically true. The story doesn't make much sense and its not the main driving force behind why people are playing this game. In-fact its quite possible to forget about pursuing the story once you get caught up in the leveling up aspect of the game.
It seems that Bungie hired some psychologists and asked them what would cause people to want to come back to a game with no story day after day. And to their credit, those psychologists were able to hit it right on the head. All the complaints you have heard about the game are basically true or carry some degree of truth to them, but even with all that apparent negativity, people are compelled to keep playing for hours on end. What gives?
Well, it boils down to the leveling system. Destiny has a leveling system that makes you want to keep coming back to level your guns, armor and ultimately your character. And what stops this repetitive action from becoming tedious is the fact that the gameplay is so much fun. That's basically it. The gameplay is really fun. Hence you will have a big grin on your face as you go through hours of stuff you have basically all seen before in your never-ending quest to rank up... And that's it, that's the gist of Destiny.
Hence some will love it and some will not...However if you are on the fence, I suggest you and a friend try renting it at the same time so you can go through it together. The cooperative aspect of this game is definitely a deal breaker and should not be missed.
