Where to start? This game is sadistic to say the least. At first, this game made me feel like a sicko, but that quickly passed. This game is the most fun I have had gaming in a very long time. What THQ and Pandemic have done is quite impressive. They have actually managed to innovate on the open-ended genre created by Rockstar.
What we have here is a completely new concept in gaming. Destroying the human race. I do not think I have ever seen a movie, heard a broadcast, or read a book about an alien invasion as seen through the eyes of the Alien. You play as Crypto, a pretty much brain dead alien. Your alien race, Furon, has discovered the secret to immortality. The problem is, that solution is cloning. After hundreds of years of cloning, the DNA strand has worn thin. The clones that are being produced can best be described as idiots. The mastermind of the race sends you to collect more DNA. Where is DNA most abundant? Earth of course.
So you bumble your way down to the planet. The first beings you encounter are cows. You try to talk to them and when they don’t respond you get aggressive. You can either shoot them with your ray blaster, use telekinesis to pick them up and slam them on the ground, or give them an anal probe. After you have destroyed all the cows, the fun begins. The humans come after you and it becomes one massive bloodfest.
You then battle farmers with shotguns, cops, and even the military. You can alternate between a spaceship and walking on foot. The game is completely open-ended and you can go any direction at any time. After you defeat a mission, you can do whatever you want until you feel fit to start the next one. There are loads of mini-games inside every mission. Mini-games range from races to massive destruction. They are quite entertaining. As you progress and you collect DNA from humans, you can purchase upgrades. In no time at all you will obtain the ability to morph into humans and perform full cavity searches. This game is an absolute riot. And the upgrades only keep coming.
The controls in this game are phenomenal. Telekinesis has never worked so well in a game before. The sheer range of what you can do with it is amazing. You can pick up any movable object including humans and control them at will. There has probably been less then ten games worth a darn that use telekinesis. And this game has mastered the controls. This will be the template for telekinesis in many games to come.
For the sake of reviewing it, I ran through this game in about ten hours. However, don’t let that fool you. I think if a gun were held to my head, I could probably do it in six hours. However, you could spend six hours alone in just one mission. I immediately went back and started putting massive hours into the first level alone. The replay value is tremendous. I really cannot say one bad thing about this game. The only improvement that immediately comes to mind is that it should be multiplayer.
