10 years ago a game came out that revolutionized freedom of choice, that game was Deus Ex. It is now the year 2011 and Deus Ex makes its mechanical return. Deus Ex Human Revolution brings freedom of choice back in to full swing more or less. Yes Human Revolution gives you freedom of choice but at certain parts that freedom of choice is wiped clean. You won't notice the ripping away of freedom of choice if you haven't played the other games but if you have you will. In Deus Ex Human Revolution you progress through an open level environments any way you want, but in some cases you freedom of choice is taken away and you have to do a boss battle. Boss battles are not optional because in order to advance the plot you have to kill them. One aspect of freedom of choice in Deus Ex is the choice of either killing or knocking out enemies. With this said you can go through the game without killing anyone, but you have to kill bosses so this not killing anyone doesn't hold true. Another thing about the boss battles is that if you don't have enough ammo or guns to win the fight, you have to reload a later save and go get some gear. This is a very frustrating because when you do fight a boss there is ammo and weapons in the room but it is not enough to get the job done, especially when on the hardest difficulty mode. Besides the boss battles your freedom of choice in Deus Ex Human Revolution has no limits, you can become a great hacker and open doors, a stealthful and merciful man, a cold blooded killer who doesn't take no for an answer, or a combination of everything. But keep in mind to do things you need to have trained in the thing you want to do. Also finding hidden paths to avoid conflict in Deus Ex takes time so if you want to play the game like a spy then prepare for some trial and error. Deus Ex has some good core innovative RPG elements that add to the experience. Training Adam Jensen in Deus Ex Human Revolution works like any RPG you level up by doing things and you are awarded with praxis points to put into you augmentation menu. You can also buy praxis points if you have the money for it. The augmentation menus in Deus Ex lets you fine tune your character to you play style. But once you select an augmentation you cannot unselect it so be wary of the choices you make.

You don't need to have played the first two games to enjoy Human Revolution but I recommend you play the first game because if you do you will notice how a bunch of things fall into place in Human Revolution. In Deus Ex Human Revolution you play Adam Jensen a man who is fresh out of the package because he had major mechanical augmentation surgery done to his body without a choice. Deus Ex Human Revolution is a story only game and its story is a great one. It took me 30 hours to complete my first play trough and I looked for a lot of hidden things so I spent more time. Also more replay value is added here because if you do certain things in Deus Ex the plot can take a few twists depending what you do. The choices you can make or simply not good or bad and the choices are made at your will so no button press choices will every come your way. The story takes a few hours to get into but once you get over that hump you get a story that you will lose sleep over because of the questions that it asks. The topics in Deus Ex cannot be answered with simple one liners but more so with complex theories. Augmentation now isn't a big ethical debt today because people who get artificial limbs in 2011 don't get them because they want to be stronger, better or faster they get them because they want mobility back. Overall Deus Ex has a very strong story that takes time to get into but once you do you won't ever forget the tale, and it has a bunch of fan service to people who love or played the original games.
The gun game in Deus Ex is great. Shooting a high powered gun has just the right amount of punch in it to seem realistic. If you are more on the non lethal side of the fence then your experience is a tad limited because there are only two non lethal guns and you will get boarded of the same two guns. Almost every gun you come across besides the stun gun can be upgraded with upgrade packs that you can either buy or find throughout the world. The upgrades to each gun are unique so every gun can become their own deadly killer. The overall combat in Deus Ex feels great but I found that I became more wrapped up in the game when I was going for a stealth agent approach. By going stealth I was able to get more depth out of the story.
Deus Ex Human Revolution is certainly not a game without bugs. A few times when playing Deus Ex you will find you self seeing the AI do weird things. For instance when you go into do a contextualized take down some times the guy you are taking down will be miss placed so it looks like your taking down the air. Also when you doing Take downs the AI around you freezes up, this feels really unnatural and is really weird to see a bunch of people still when you are killing there buddy. The AI sometimes will not find real cover so they might be standing around doing nothing when you clearly have a gun in their face. On top of a few graphical bugs Deus Ex can freeze up your consul. The freezes happened to me the most when I was using a really powerful shot gun. A plus however is that the load times are not that bad.
The graphics in Deus Ex are good in my opinion because the square like cyber punk figures is what the artists wanted. The character models really merge with the overall mood of the game. The only problem I have with the graphics is that sometimes when you pop out of cover to use you gun the frame rate might dip and textures might seem a bit distorted. This problem really doesn't effect the game play experience at all and the new cyber punk feel is nice to see in the age of war torn city art directions.
Deus Ex Human Revolution is an augmented experience that you will remember for years to come. The story will wrap you in a web that will make you never want to put the controller down and the freedom of choice outside of boss battles can make for very interesting game play scenarios. I give Deus Ex Human Revolution a 9 out of 10 because of its strong narrative, open level environments, good gun play, great story manipulation, great art direction, and innovative RPG elements. The two things that could have made Human Revolution a 10 out of 10 are the choice to let a boss live and less graphical glitches. If you want a game that can last a life time that offers many ways of play and that has an epic story then I recommend Deus Ex Human Revolution, and if you are on the fence about the game … just get it already, you will regret it if you don't.
