Good
- this game is a pioneer to hack and slash. The action is a lot of fun.
- variety of different weapons, and combos.
- the bosses and enemies had interesting designs
Bad
- the camera is god awful. This isn't a big issue for regular fights, but it makes certain boss fights extremely irritating, to the point where I threw in the towel. It was mission 16, fighting the amoeba looking boss. Dodging his laser attack, I had to walk across the screen. By the time I reached the part near the wall, the camera would instantly change on me making me get caught by the laser, which dealt massive damage. This wasn't because I didn't know where to go, but rather I was fighting with the camera. In fact, it would have been easier for the camera to just stay in one place at the back for me to see everything. Every time the camera changed, it also changed my controls. I could hold it and continue the direction, but the instant I needed to adjust it a little bit, my direction would completely change. A quarter of the time, the damn enemy is completely out of the frame. Dante has a side roll or a back jump. These two maneuvers feel uncontrollable because of the constant camera changes. For example, I want to side roll, but the camera changes, and it turns into a back flip, and I get hit with an air attack. Hell, at this point, it would actually help if they put lines on the floor for where the camera change happens. This is unacceptable design for an action game. The devs had action games older than this to take notes from, such as Mario 64, Ocarina of time, Crash Bandicoot, etc. which all had great camera controls/placement. DMC1 camera is horrendous, and greatly hinders the experience.
- I don't like the game separated with missions screens. I felt like it could've done without them. The progression would feel more organic had the segments just continue seamlessly without being interrupted by a mission complete screen.
